In the UK, 81% of workers say they have a good work/life balance. With flexible and hybrid working influencing workplace culture, workloads are shifting – but some employees are still clocking significant overtime.
A study by Adobe Express found that one in 10 Brits are working overtime more than five days a week. While a third (31%) said they do extra hours for the additional pay, the main driver is workload. Forty-one percent work overtime because they have too much to do during regular hours, while 37% cited deadline pressures.
Forty percent are content with their role and overtime levels, saying they are not seeking a new job. Twenty-one percent are actively looking and have received an offer elsewhere, while 19% are searching but have yet to secure a new position.
By industry, law leads the way, with 20% working overtime seven days per week. In property and construction, one in 10 do the same, followed by 8% in engineering and manufacturing. In contrast, only 2% of retail workers put in overtime every day.
The findings highlight a clear divide across sectors, with some professionals facing relentless schedules while others maintain a healthier balance.
